29 best kids skin care products, according to Parents magazine

10 of the best baby skincare products

You'll see all kinds of labels and claims on skincare and body products, and many of them don't mean very much ( "natural" for example, is a completely unregulated term ). Really, your choice should be based on your personal preference and the type of skin your child has. Here are a few other things to consider:

When it comes to looking after your baby's skin, there's an overwhelming number of products on the market, from oils and balms to classic baby lotions. Deciding which one is right for your baby can take a bit of trial and error, but knowing what other parents love can help you narrow the search. Our home testers have tried dozens of different skincare products on babies with all different skin types, and we've narrowed it down to 10 of the best.

Fragrance – Many parents opt for fragrance-free formulas for young babies, believing it's the fragrance in a product that can cause allergic reactions. This is sometimes the case, but many gentle baby products have lovely fragrances which can add to the experience of using them. This decision depends on the sensitivity of your child's skin. If in doubt, test on a small area.

Application – Some baby moisturisers come in small tubes that are useful for travel, others in tubs, others with a pump-action dispenser which make application quick and easy. Think about which will work best for you.

Packaging – If you have an older baby or toddler they'll be interested in all the bottles, lotions and potions you keep by the changing table, so packaging that features familiar faces or bright colours might appeal to them and make the task a bit easier.

Is it vegan? – Products that are suitable for vegans will carry a "certified vegan" logo on the packaging. They won't contain animal-derived products like honey, lanolin and beeswax.

Is it hypoallergenic? – Hypoallergenic products are usually formulated using ingredients that are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. However, there is only guidance on this, not specific rules, and no brand can completely guarantee that a product won't cause a reaction.

Is it cruelty-free / not tested on animals? – Animal testing for cosmetics in the UK and EU has been banned since 2009. However this is a complex issue, as individual ingredients may still have tested on animals before this date, in other countries, or for other reasons. You can look for the leaping bunny logo to find the products that have gone the extra mile when it comes to being cruelty-free.

Are baby lotions and creams safe for newborns?

While using a lotion or cream is a lovely part of the bath time experience – and a necessary part of the daily routine if your child has dry skin or a condition like eczema or psoriasis – you don't need to start straight away. Newborns have very delicate skin and, according to NHS guidelines, they are best bathed in plain water with no lotions or creams for the first few weeks. You can start introducing a lotion or cream once they're a month old.

Here’s our pick of the best baby skincare products tested by parents…

1. Mum and Baby Explorer Face the Day Stick, £9.99

Best for outdoors

The Face the Day stick is designed to protect delicate skin from the elements, providing a barrier against wind, drizzle and even drool. Our testers found the balm was both effective and easy to use. It’s great for soothing irritated skin while the stick applicator meant it was easy to use when out and about.

Mum of 2, Anna thought it was a “great applicator for on the go and to keep everything hygienic when out and about,” while others were also particularly impressed by the hypoallergenic formula. The stick also meant there was no product wastage, and no need to use fingers unnecessarily, keeping things hygienic too.

A favourite for everyday moisturising that's particularly good on dry skin, Aveeno's cream uses the natural and gentle properties of oat essence and colloidal oatmeal to keep skin soft, and the compact 150ml tube is great for packing in a changing bag or overnight bag.

Our home testers were full of praise, with Zara saying, "Aveeno Baby Daily Care is the best moisturiser for my daughters. It's the only thing that helped their dry skin." Pooja was also a fan, saying "both my little ones had dry skin and the Aveeno products were best for them to maintain healthy skin," she said.

Our home testers found the lotion smooth and well-absorbing, rather than being tacky, so it was easy to apply to little ones’ skin. Mum of 3 Stephanie said she liked, “the fact that it’s environmentally friendly. It soothes my baby’s skin and has a very subtle scent. It has made her skin so soft again and she’s had zero reactions.”

4. Good Bubble Little Softy Moisturiser, £3.99

Best for Gruffalo fans

If your child needs a little encouragement during the bedtime routine, get a friendly face involved with this mild and gentle body lotion featuring the Gruffalo.

You may recognise natural and organic brand Good Bubble from the TV show Dragon’s Den. Known for being vegan and cruelty free at an affordable price point, this particular product has proved a best-seller.

Ideal for sensitive skin, the mild and gentle formula was popular with parents with the addition of coconut and avocado oil making it super moisturising, and prickly pear extract for what our home tester Sammy described as "a lovely but not overpowering scent."

Mum Puneet even said it didn’t sting on her 2 children’s eczema and added, “The cream had a nice consistency and with a pleasant aroma. Glad to know it is cruelty-free and free from commonly-used chemicals.”

Available from: Amazon, Boots, Good Bubble

5. Child's Farm Baby Moisturiser, £7.99

Best for dry skin

A perennial bestseller, Child's Farm's baby moisturiser is loved by parents for its mild fragrance, easily-absorbed consistency, and the way it tackles dry skin and flaky patches. Parents of children with eczema often rave about this product, and many adults with the condition also use it.

Our home tester Rachael said, "I love the Child’s Farm range, I find it the best for my son’s skin and helps keep his eczema at bay!" while Jess agreed that it "has to be child’s farm all the way."

The lotion contains cocoa and shea butter for softness, and is tested for sensitive skin. There's also a fragrance-free version for those who prefer.

7. Mustela Hydra Bebe Facial Cream, £8

Best for faces

If your baby suffers from dry cheeks, drool rash or teething rash, this gentle face cream can help to soothe those nasty red patches. Home tester Claire says that it's "a little pricey but totally worth it," and says she uses it on her own skin too.

It combines shea butter with sweet almond oil, jojoba seed oil and vitamins E and F for long-lasting hydration and softness. It's designed to be safe for use from birth, but as we mentioned, babies don't need any skincare products during the first month (unless prescribed by a doctor).

Best for easy application

If you have a wriggly baby or toddler who hates being on the changing table after bath time, this lotion is a great option. The pump-action bottle can be used one-handed if you're smart, and despite being called a butter it's actually quite a light texture which rubs in easily and soaks in quickly.

The chocolate-coconut scent is also irresistible to both parents and little ones, with home tester Cat saying, "Palmers is a favourite in my smells amazing, their skin so soft and have had no issues with dry skin spots."

There's also a spray-on oil available in the range which is perfect for baby massage.

9. Bloom and Blossom the Very Hungry Caterpillar Moisturiser, £5

Best for bedtime

The soothing and relaxing lavender and jasmine scent of this baby moisturiser makes it a great choice for a gentle massage before bedtime. Home tester Natalie praised its light consistency, saying it is "not too runny nor too thick. This made pre-bedtime massages easy to do."

Home tester Kayleigh was also a huge fan, and said, "This is by far my favourite moisturiser, others have been good but this is like magic in a bottle, not to even mention the smell. It smells delicious."

Our testers loved the packaging, which appealed particularly to toddlers and preschoolers who are familiar with the Very Hungry Caterpillar book. The pump applicator is also a great bonus and a way to get little hands involved.

10. Baby Kingdom Body Cream, £16.95

Best for luxury

Awards: Joint Gold – Baby and child bath and body wash, MadeForMums Awards 2021

The texture of Baby Kingdom's body cream was a huge hit with our home testers, who praised how quickly it was absorbed into the skin, and the instant results that it provided. "I applied a tiny amount to underneath my daughters chin today as she often gets a sore patch, I cant believe the result, it cleared almost instantly," said home tester Danielle.

Meanwhile, Eden loved the scent, saying, "I am extremely impressed with this moisturiser. It has the best smell of any product I have used for my baby so far."

Although it's a more expensive product, our testers thought this was worth the money, praising everything from the packaging to the pump dispenser. If you like to treat your little one to some luxury, this is definitely a great option.

Your newborn’s skin is so delicate, it’s important to use products that protect and are designed for babies. With so many baby skincare products on the market, it can be hard to know which ones are best for baby skin, and which have been tried and tested by parents. We’ve taken a look at all the products on the market and seen which ones parents are rating or ranting about. Here are the BabyCentre Love It award winners for the best baby skincare products our editors have highlighted, supported by the recommendations our experienced parents in the BabyCentre Community have shared.Baby wash, hair wash, massage oil, moisturiser, lotion… it can feel overwhelming knowing what you should use to clean and care for your baby, and how often you need to use it.Although babies don’t get dirty – that comes in those toddler years when they’re jumping in puddles and mud – they do need a wash or bath frequently, as milk often collects in places you wouldn’t imagine, like their neck skin folds, and it’s surprising how much fluff you can find between their toes.As a baby’s skin is more delicate and thinner than an adult’s, it is best to use products designed especially for them and to prevent their skin drying out. Baby products also tend to avoid perfumes, soap or alcohol that can be found in those made for adults. Some baby product ranges may say “pH balanced” which is measuring the alkaline or acidic levels of a product. There’s more information about pH levels and how it may affect your baby’s skin in our article on choosing baby skincare products Although you may want to ensure your little one is clean, avoid anything marked as anti-bacterial or anti-microbial, as these aren’t safe for your baby. We’ve looked at the baby skincare products our Community parents think are must-buys and crowned them BabyCentre Love It award winners.Suitable for newborns, babies, toddlers and beyond, the Childs Farm range is very popular with parents and, as you can use the range with little ones who have sensitive skin or eczema, it makes it a great choice.Sold in cute packaging and with an inviting smell, the newborn range includes body wash, bedtime bubbles and oaty bubbles for those with very sensitive skin, as well as baby oil, shampoo, moisturiser and nappy cream. There’s also a pillow spray (advised for use after six months) to help your baby settle.Although a gentle product, the whole range includes wonderful scents, such as organic fig, tangerine or watermelon and pineapple, leaving your little one smelling delicious. The brand also celebrates that it’s vegan-friendly and doesn’t include palm or kernel oil, so a great product for those who prefer a more environmentally-friendly option. The products aren’t the cheapest on the market."I use Childs Farm baby moisturiser. It’s great value for money and keeps my son’s skin really soft as it can occasionally get dry. They’re also all organic products so feel good to use on baby, I use their baby bath bubbles too and baby wash.""I use Childs Farm products for my little girl and think they’re great! When she a few months old she started to get quite bad eczema - we were prescribed lots of soap substitutes, moisturisers etc by the GP but the only thing that’s cleared it up and has prevented it from flaring up again is the Childs Farm moisturiser.""We’ve been using Childs Farm bubble bath, bath wash and nappy cream and think they’re fab."Aveeno has covered all the bases for baby skincare. They have a daily care, calming, soothing relief and dermexa range. Using natural oats within the mix, their products are favourites among mums and dads for babies with particularly sensitive skin, including those prone to eczema *.Parents like the thick, but easy-to-absorb consistency of the products, which help moisturize and soothe the delicate skin of a newborn. Some parents say they have also been prescribed Aveeno by their doctor as the product is so great for sensitive skin. With a mid-range price point, this isn’t the cheapest option on the market, but it's certainly not the most expensive either."I use the Aveeno hair and body wash and the Aveeno baby moisturiser. The products are the best I have ever used, they wash hair and body well and don't dry out skin or upset eyes. The moisturiser is fabulous and although I think it is expensive I feel it is still good value for money because it works and you only need a tiny bit so it lasts a long time.""I only use Aveeno on my little one! He suffers from eczema and this has been recommended to use by the hospital as it’s so gentle. I also absolutely love the smell of it too!"Whether you use them with your baby or not, most parents have heard of Johnson’s. Used by many of our parents on us when we were babies, the products – and their distinctive smell – are known worldwide. Having launched the newborn range Cottontouch, Johnson’s continues to offer new and popular products for parents. The Cottontouch range is proving popular among mums and dads, and they’ve listened to their customers and taken out some of the ingredients previously used within their baby range. As well as the new Cottontouch range, there’s also the classics, kids and bedtime range claiming to help your baby drift off to sleep. Some parents feel the products aren’t the best for babies with sensitive skin."I use Johnson's baby shampoo and love it. My baby smells amazing, I only use a pea-sized amount for her.""I use the baby shampoo as it helps her cradle cap.""I used Johnson’s on all three of my children with no issues. I will use again with this baby.""Lovely and gentle on my baby’s skin."With a fragrance-free formula suitable for newborns, Dove Baby products have become a firm favourite with parents in their short time on the market. Parents are saying they love them for their babies, but also just as much for themselves as they do for their babies. The range includes Rich Moisture Head-to-toe Wash, Rich Moisture Lotion, Rich Moisture Shampoo, Rich Moisture Wipes and even a Rich Moisture Baby Bar. There’s also a range specifically for sensitive skin too.As it says in many of the product names, Dove Baby places moisturiser high up the list of importance with their products and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by parents. The Rich Moisture Baby Bar and Rich Moisture Lotion contain 25% moisturising cream.Often on offer, the Dove Baby range is also great value-for-money compared to some of the other leaders in the market.Fans say they wish the bottles were available in a larger size."As a lover of Dove myself I’ve always used their products so I thought my baby can use the same but the baby version!""During the newborn stage I used the Dove baby range. It smells lovely and I found the moisturiser didn't take too long to soak in.""I love the smell of it and never had any reactions."Promising their baby products are 99.8% natural, the Burt’s Bees baby range has a lot of fans. Not only do parents love using the products on their babies for how gentle they are on their skin, but they say the smell is glorious. Many also like using the products on themselves, with many rating the baby oil as a great eye make-up remover!Their range includes nourishing original lotion, shampoo and body wash, bubble bath, baby oil and diaper ointment.Burt’s Bees is a regular recommendation by parents in our Community and with more than 35 years in the business, the brand clearly knows what works for babies and parents. The products are expensive unless you can buy when there’s an offer."Both of my babies have had extremely sensitive skin and Burt’s Bees products have always been good to their skin.""Burt’s Bees is deffo one of the more natural things to use on baby. I’ve used this on both my boys from birth and they both have eczema. It was the only thing that didn’t irritate it and make it worse.""It smells the best too. I still use the shampoo/body wash for my two and three year olds."
